Honouring Pride and Indigenous History Month Stories of Resilience, Resistance, and Reconnection
June is both Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month in Canada—a time to honour the histories, contributions, and continued presence of Indigenous Peoples and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
For us at Wiidookodaadiwin, it’s not just a moment for celebration—it’s a call to witness the resilience of Indigenous Peoples, especially those whose identities exist at the intersections of Two Spirit, queer, and trans experience. These are stories of survival, strength, and belonging—despite systems that have long tried to erase or silence them.
The History That Shapes Our Present
Colonialism didn’t just take land—it disrupted relationships, knowledge systems, gender roles, and spiritual practices. Many Two Spirit and gender-diverse people were once revered within their communities. Colonisation imposed binaries, shame, and disconnection.
And yet—we are still here. Thriving. Reclaiming.
Whether it’s through language revitalisation, ceremony, art, or community organising, Indigenous Peoples in Canada continue to push back against erasure. This includes 2SLGBTQIA+ leaders who are holding cultural and political space, often with little recognition or resourcing.
This month, we remember and honour those who came before—and those still fighting for visibility, safety, and belonging.
Resilience Isn’t Just Survival—It’s Reconnection
When we speak of resilience at Wiidookodaadiwin, we’re not talking about pushing through or pretending everything is fine. We’re talking about:
- Reclaiming your story
- Finding community that sees and celebrates all of you
- Healing at the level of spirit, not just symptom
- Remembering who you are beyond systems that made you feel broken
Many of our clients come to us feeling disconnected—from their culture, their body, their community, or their voice. Therapy can be a place to begin again. To grieve. To name the harm. And to rebuild trust in yourself and your relationships.
A Space Where You Don’t Have to Explain Everything
We work with Indigenous and Two Spirit clients across Ontario who are carrying:
- Intergenerational trauma
- Disconnection from land or culture
- Identity-based harm or spiritual loss
- Anxiety, grief, and burnout from advocacy, caregiving, or simply surviving
You don’t have to show up as only one part of yourself. We welcome your complexity, your contradictions, your stories that don’t fit neatly in a checkbox.
We believe healing happens in relationship—with self, land, ancestors, and community. And that Two Spirit and Indigenous queer folks deserve care that doesn’t require translation.
Pride and Indigenous History: More Than a Month
This month is a powerful time to reflect, reconnect, and recommit—but our care and our joy aren’t limited to a calendar.
Whether you’re just starting to reclaim your identity or have been walking this path for years, know that you belong. Your healing matters. Your story matters.
