Frequently Asked Questions: Starting Therapy with a Therapist

Starting therapy is a big step, especially if you are new to the idea of counseling (or new to Canada!).

Cambridge, Ontario is a vibrant and diverse city, and many people here are looking for support as they adjust to new experiences, cultures, and challenges. We understand that reaching out for help can feel overwhelming—especially if you come from a community that has not always trusted therapy, or if English is not your first language. Our team is here to make the process as comfortable, trauma-informed, and person-centred as possible. (This also includes offering sessions in other languages, by the way!)

Below are some of the most common questions people ask when considering working with a therapist on our team, either in person in Cambridge, Ontario, or virtually! If there’s a question that you have that isn’t answered here, please feel free to reach out and let us know. We are happy to support you.

What does a therapist do?

A therapist helps people talk about their feelings, thoughts, and challenges in a safe and private space. Therapists are trained to listen, support, and guide you as you work through difficult times, learn new coping skills, and set goals for your well-being.

How do I know if I need counseling?

If you are experiencing feelings that you can’t express or talk about (like feeling sad, stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed) or if you are having trouble adjusting to life in Canada, counseling may help. Therapy is not just for serious problems—it is for anyone who wants support, understanding, or help making positive changes.

What can I expect in my first session with a therapist?

Your first session is a chance to get to know your therapist and share what you are hoping to get out of  therapy. You do not have to share everything at once. The therapist will ask some questions about your life and what you hope to achieve, and you can ask any questions you have about the process. (If you’re interested in what kind of questions that you can ask your therapist in the first consultation, we have a blog post on that here

Is online therapy available?

Yes! All of our therapists offer virtual therapy, or can meet you at our office in Cambridge if that’s easier. This means you can talk to your therapist from home using your phone or computer. Online therapy is a good option if you have a busy schedule, transportation challenges, or prefer the comfort of your own space.

Can therapy be offered in another language?

Absolutely. If English is not your first language, you can ask if therapy is available in your preferred language. For example, our team includes therapists who can offer sessions in Urdu. This can help you feel more comfortable and understood during your sessions.

Is therapy confidential? What happens to my information?

Yes, therapy is confidential. This means that what you share with your therapist stays private. All therapists follow strict rules to protect your information. Your personal details and what you talk about in sessions will not be shared with anyone else, unless you give permission or there is a serious safety concern.

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

It is important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with. You can ask about their experience, approach, and if they have worked with people from similar backgrounds or situations. Many therapists offer a free consultation so you can see if it feels like a good fit before starting regular sessions.

What if I am nervous about starting therapy or have had bad experiences before?

Feeling nervous is normal, especially if therapy is new to you or if you have had difficult experiences in the past. A trauma-informed, person-centred therapist will go at your pace and make sure you feel safe and respected. You can always share your concerns and ask for what you need.
