What is DBT?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a wonderful approach that helps people navigate intense emotions, manage stress, and cultivate healthier relationships. Dr. Marsha Linehan initially created it to support those with borderline personality disorder (BPD), but over the years, we’ve discovered that DBT can offer valuable assistance for a variety of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, self-harm, and substance use.
The term “dialectical” in DBT refers to balancing two opposing ideas: accepting ourselves as we are while simultaneously striving for change. This balance is essential for managing emotions in a healthy manner.
Why is DBT Important?
Many individuals commonly experience feelings of being overwhelmed, impulsive behavior, or difficulties in relationships. This is where DBT proves beneficial! This method provides practical skills to ease the navigation through these tough times. It helps individuals learn to regulate their emotions, handle distress, practice mindfulness, and enhance their communication with others. In contrast to traditional talk therapy, DBT focuses on actionable strategies that enable people to build a life they genuinely cherish.

DBT is structured around four key skill sets:
- Mindfulness – Learning to stay present in the moment without judgment.
- Distress Tolerance – Building the ability to handle challenging emotions and situations without worsening them.
- Emotion Regulation – Understanding emotions and learning how to manage them effectively.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness – Strengthening communication skills and setting healthy boundaries in relationships.
